Green Opportunities on ABC News

A local company is using stimulus money to get people employed and help the environment. Green Opportunities, a local non-profit that is helping to train those who have had previous barriers to steady employment, got a 75 thousand dollar stimulus grant to weatherize 60 homes in west Asheville. The non-profit helps training in a field they say is in high demand.

Stimulus Pays Off with Jobs in Solar Sector

Delario Cato has federal stimulus funding along with a year of hard training to thank for his new job. Cato used to work odd jobs around hotels before settling on a career in the green economy. As an apprentice through Asheville Green Opportunities, a nonprofit training young people for green-collar jobs, the 28-year-old has landed a position with FLS Energy, an expanding solar power company. “I can really see some career opportunities ahead,” Cato said as he assembled controls for solar hot water systems at FLS Energy's new warehouse on Amboy Road.

Banding Together: Hard work, Community define Burton Street's History, Residents say

The Burton Street neighborhood has changed a lot since DeWayne Barton was a boy. “All this used to be a wooded area,” he says, motioning toward a line of houses adjoining the neighborhood’s community garden. “The whole place used to be like a little forest. I remember, growing up, I would play out here, only coming back to eat strawberry ice cream. We’d play with little army men and dump trucks.”
